web designers, check out this site?

December 27, 2009 - 8:09 am 2 Comments

I have paid someone to design this site for me. I’ve been told by the designer that it is complete. I know nothing about managing or maintaining a web site. Does this look like a finished product to you? The designer said they will now turn it over to me to arrange the catagories as to how I want them. How easy will that be for me to do without any experience?

Also, how much should I expect to pay someone to moderate the site for me? The designer has offered to do that.

Also, will I be able to get another designer to spruce up this site a little? If I know some Dreamweaver and Photoshop, can I do the design of this website any differently?
Actually, the designer just now told me they would charge $150. a month. Is this a good deal?

The site you provided looks incomplete to me…
You should ask for a refund.

Web developers - do you try to make sites look optimal in IE 6 anymore?

December 24, 2009 - 8:18 pm 4 Comments

IE 6 has always been a nightmare to code sites for, and now we’re debating whether we should even bother to make sites look optimal in IE 6 anymore or just tell our users "this site looks best in IE 7 and up." Are you still trying to make sites look optimal in IE 6?

It depends on your visitor base and your level of professional commitment to your clients.

Different sites currently report as little as 11% of visitors browsing with IE6 and as high a 29% (down from 38% a little over a year ago…it is getting better). Current average is probably in the 20% neighborhood. My shop doesn’t bother to pretend to know enough about the potential visitor profile for our clients to be willing to offend even 11% of visitors. On our own sites, we encourage all IE users to come over from the dark side, but we support IE6 and will continue to do so until it drops below the 1% mark. Our customers pay us to make them look good in all browsers (heck! we had one customer earlier this year whose default browser shop-wide WAS IE6 - as long as their checks don’t bounce, I’ll develop for them).

We take the approach of doing all initial development rounds for Firefox and then adding alternate stylesheets for IE (fixes the stuff that works the same in all IEs), an IE7 stylesheet (that fixes the common failings of everything older than IE8), and finally an IE6 version that repairs the leftover style silliness peculiar to IE6. JavaScript is a little simpler in some ways, but we do make it all work the same. Very rarely, we’ve had to tweak for Safari or Opera…never had to be different for Chrome - yet.

Doesn’t matter how I feel about it…we serve our clients by making sure they are properly visible and attractive to everyone without regard to foolish browser choices. Admittedly, we neglect about 5% of the entire browsing universe - all the very rare browsers that consistently show up individually under the 1% mark, e.g., Linux Konqueror (I say that, typing from my Kubuntu laptop but surfing on Firefox).

A question for website developers: I understand ads loading first, but why is primary content the LAST to load?

December 24, 2009 - 8:18 pm 3 Comments

Again, I understand that most websites are financed by advertising. I get it.

What I don’t understand is why the core of the website is the very last to load.

For example, let’s say you’re reading a news column. You load the site. First the ads come up. Then the menus and buttons. Then the archives links. Then the help links. Then the links to other sites. etc. etc. etc. Then, at the very end, the column loads.

Why are archive links or links to other websites considered more priority than the actual content? I came to the page to seek the material. The ad loaded, the website made its money. What purpose is there in putting up all that other crap first?

I always wondered this about Microsoft Word. You open Microsoft Word, and you have that delay where it loads fonts and functions and blah blah blah before it gives you the page. Why not load the page first, give me the cursor, and then load the other stuff in the background? It’s not like I can type fast enough such that I’d need to be accessing formatting functions before it was able to load.

So… what’s the logic, because I’m sure there is some?

I guess it’s so that you get to see or use the complete product. If you started using MS Word before it had finished loading it’d be slow to respond and feel sluggish. This would encourage users to try alternatives and MS would lose business.

Websites tend to be designed to load their template first followed by content. This is probably because most pages of a site have the same template. The content is added after the template so that a new page can be created easily. It’s a far fetched educated guess, but it just might be right!

E-Commerce websites without knowing web design?

December 21, 2009 - 7:05 pm 3 Comments

I need to build an e-commerce website and I have absolutely zero web design skills. I dont even know how to upload a file using dream weaver. I needed help changing my nameservers. However, despite my limitations, I still need an e-commerce site.

I need a site that is affordable. I dont want to pay more than a few hundred dollars, including hosting.
I need paypal integration.
I need to be able to upload my own graphic backgrounds, not just use ready made templates, unless those templates allow me to use my own photos for background images.
I need to be able to categorize my items by type and size, and put 1 item into multiple categories.
I need to be able to stock items by attribute. 1 item may be available in multiple sizes. I dont want to have to create multiple listings for the same item in different sizes, and I want my inventory to stock by size and attribute as well.
I want it to be simple and affordable.

Is there anything out there that is up to my specifications?

If you want all this done you will probably need to hire a web programmer, which, by the looks of it, could cost a few hundred dollars.
From what i can see, you have sorting items, you would be using a database.
look into databases with MySQL and also look into PHP

Can I sue company for holding my domain name and website design?

December 21, 2009 - 7:05 pm 3 Comments

I had a website designed by a company and paid for that design. My account with them is due I didn’t pay for the renewal and they took my site down. They are holding my domain name and the design is gone. Can they do that? Isn’t that website design mine and if so how do I get it? Can they hold my domain name? They are costing me loss of money here what do I do? I don’t want to renew with them because they are overcharging me for the domain name and the webhosting.

Well how much are they overcharging? ….Most of these companies are very competative so I can’t see the difference in price between them and other companies being very much…and in that case if your talking $20 or $30 WHO CARES!

If you sue them..the cost of that event will be monumentally greater than the difference of your other hosting service….times ten. So..thats really not a logical option.

Get your site up and focus on making more money with actual sales, not by penny pinching expenses.

For now I would pay the bill for the next year….and during that time, have your domain ownership registration transferred to you personally. Obtain the website on CD in HTML format and the raw design format (The actual files from whatever design software was used to create the pages)

Until you do those things, they have you by the *alls

Good Luck

What service can a Computer Repair and Web Design Company do to make more money?

December 3, 2009 - 2:42 pm 2 Comments

My father owns a Computer Repair and Web Design Company. He will one day pass it on to me, I need a Business degree first. I want to get the company making more money so I can move it into an office building and hire on staff, then continue expansion. Right now, it is a work out of the home business me, my brother, and my dad run it. Anyone have any suggestions on what else should be added to make more money for the company?

Farm out some of your web design to a company like MA WebCenters. We provide a complete, top-of-the-line web design and hosting, including e-commerce, flash and all the latest technology. And we compensate you for each web site sold through your efforts and a substantial monthly residual n the portfolio you develop. We’ve created an impressive on-line web building software that’s as user friendly as using Microsoft word. If you can point and click a mouse you can use this software. And we provide unlimited customer support to your customers. All while you get paid to refer your customers and increase your online portfolio. And best of all, you can still do design work on the sites you manage, and charge continue to charge for your time and services. You’ll then be in a position to decide whether you want to move to an office.
