What would you look for if you were to hire a website designer for your business? 10 points for best answers?

If you were a small/medium sized business owner and you needed a website, what would you look for in any website developer which you come across to decide if they is/are the right one?

A varied portfolio — a few designers’ portfolios I’ve checked out have shown different sites that all look more or less the same. If I’m spending more than $40 for a template download, I want a commensurate level of attention paid to the project.

Not underpriced. No free samples, which believe it or not I’ve actually been offered. Makes me wonder how much their time is really worth if they’re willing to give it away.

I don’t care one way or another if they work out of their home or a commercial space.

A questionnaire provided to me to fill out stating the site’s goals, basic features I require like product descriptions and pricing, wishlist features, whether I will provide artwork or if I need you to create new images, etc. Then once you have an idea of what I’m shooting for, you can break down estimated fees and time required.

A realistic schedule laid out, and firm deadlines for the different stages of development. A point of conflict I’ve noticed between designers and clients is different expectations of how long a project like this takes.

Basically I’d want to know they have their financial and creative house in order before proceeding. A professional who laid out their own expectations and their expectations of me would win me over. If someone walked through my door and asked for a flat rate for a small site without really talking with me about it, I’d think they were total novices and that they’d be using me to learn on.

How do you copyright your website in Canada?

October 27, 2009 - 12:52 am 3 Comments

I’ve been to the website where they have the forms and all, but I didn’t find information on how to register both the text and the images in a website. Should they be registered separately?

Also, who would own which parts of the website? By this, I mean, should the website’s developer copyright the code used to create the website and should the client copyright the text and images displayed?

What if the developer created images for the site?

Thanks!

If a Website developer did your site for you, it’s probably already copyrighted by them.

Ask them the same question.

Out-sourcing a website job, how to avoid being back-stabbed?

October 21, 2009 - 7:36 am 2 Comments

I’m taking the job of making a website for a particular artist and trying to out-source it to another website developer. I’ll be making profit from the actual purchase of the job, as well as a percentage of the money earned from merchandising. How can I avoid the person from making the website from contacting and making some kind of deal with the musical artist that this website is being developed for?

Have the developer sign a noncompete agreement.

so you want a webmaste or someone to build you a website, maintain it for free and if successful you will make them a partner!!

Good luck!!

I am a webmaster and have built many many websites - but not for free on the promise of becoming a partner if it is succesful.

There are many programs that you can learn easily to build basic sites yourself

Does anyone know where I can find a really good Software and website developer for a very low price (Free services would be nice)?I am obviously looking for someone to help me develop a website.

I’m a beginner too, and i just found this software a few minutes ago, it’s called Easy Web Editor website creator 2007, it’s a freeware, the review says that it has a friendly interface and it’s easy to use for beginners, the incredible thing is its size less than 2 Mb and its capability to create very good websites. Try it.
