Desperately Need Advice regarding E-commerce Website!?

October 21, 2009 - 7:36 am

am student (Web Design) and I have just started to build my Portfolio. Everything has been going really great - but now I have an Ecommerce site and I am in way over my head. Initially, the client was going to be selling a few items, and just wanted a shopping cart. Now, it has turned into a full blown ecommerce site. He wants buyers to be able to create a login that will remember their credit card information, he wants to accept all major credit cards apart from Paypal, and he wants to transactions to be processed instantly. Basically he wants amazon.com. I know that this is where I need to learn PHP and My SQL. Here is my dilemma - do I back out now and give him his money back, or do I push through? I have looked at store "templates" but there doesn’t seem to be anything I can integrate into my site. ANY suggestions would be VERY MUCH appreciated.

    Try zen cart…

Depends how hard you want to work yourself, what quality your customer is expecting and how customised you need to make it.

It easy to get in over your head when making web pages. Only do it if you feel comfortable enought to make all that stuff. That is a lot coding to do, not to mention teaching the person running the site how it works.

but if your going to do it, try mambo-phpShop
    http://virtuemart.net
works with Mambo (very cool) http://mambo-foundation.org/

Best thing you can do in a situation like this, is just be up front with your client, inform of your concerns about the website and just tell him you might be able to recommend someone who might be better suited to take on a website that size. Don’t tell him out right that you don’t have the skill to complete it, just give him some techie talk and that its out of your capacity to complete in a timely manner, I think he will respect you more for that, than not being able to finish the contract on time and only for it to have lots of bugs and problems later on.

He might even call you to handle up-keep and more budget jobs.

Say to him this is a one man web designing company not a corporation. Clients will always do this, its in their blood I suppose, I get this all the time myself. Will they realize how many workers work for amazon.com tell them thousands. If he wants amazon.com tell him to buy it. If you are new to php, mysql I recommend studying it thoroughly you must know security otherwise you will be responsible if anything should occur. Well in regards of giving him his money back, basically do what you think is worth it for the both of you. This has to be fixed because he doesn’t know what you are capable of and is taking advantage. If you would like to copy this and email it to him you may.
