How do i set up a online store?

October 27, 2009 - 12:52 am

I’m currently in school for web design. I’m proficient with xhtml, css, and flash. I have a client that would like to sell their t shirts online. I have never designed a e-commerce site before. What would be a good route to take when desiging a e-commerce site? I thought about oscommerce and a yahoo merchant account. What should i do?

I would recommend a solution which manages content dynamically. If you apply a theme to a shopping cart that provides this capability, your friend can manage the content and the business while developing web skills over time.

Begin by reviewing several shopping cart packages. Unless you are prepared to learn programming, leave the cart structure to programmers, and select one which:

1. plays to your strengths in site building
2. is easy for your friend to use
3. offers the feature list which can best support the business.

This might well be Magento, but Zen Cart is a good candidate as well. osCommerce may be a bit more time consuming to modify, and likely would not support all the features needed out of the box for this type of business. My background is in PHP/MySQL Open Source - but don’t neglect other technologies.

if you definately need help you can contact me, best way is to go here usgaming.co.uk and make a post asking for the alias include.

Ok now you will need a MySQL db, this can be set up using phpMyAdmin if you server supports this form. The other method depending on how interactive you need the ecommerce would be to use php, or php with ajax. Ajax for the server side interactions etc.
PhP can be quite hard to get to grips with but is a fairly easy language to learn.
Anywho if you have any questions dont hesistate to ask more!

I have i got the cure for you. I have run and used MANY different online stores: os-Commerce, e-Commerce, x-cart, etc… There is now a newer shopping cart that is amazingly still open source, on heck of a powerful system. Check out the Magento shopping system. You will be complete amazed. The only issue is getting it configured and find a hosting company for the shopping cart that can handle the amount of bandwidth it uses. For that I also have a suggestion. simiplehelix.com can handle it quite easily and actually has a ‘one-click’ install for the magento shopping cart.

    hope this helps.

Many sites offer e-Commerce solutions, easy to install on-line store. You can set up pay pal and i believe they charge 2% of sales,, no monthly fees. If you would like e-mail me I run jcjhosting.com and i would be more than happy to give you a few months free webhosting to check it out. we have 4 diffrent e-commerce packages to chose from. I can offer a free sub-domain but a http://www.yoursite.com would be around 9-10 bucks and you can get that from godaddy or what ever register you decide.
