What is the best software for web site design and management?

January 9, 2010 - 6:20 am

Thanks, everyone.

I have two purposes for the question. One is that I am applying for a job that requires web site management. I do not know the software that the organization uses. It is a registered charity.

I am also trying to learn so that I can put up a tribute site to my late partner who was a writer. I want it to be a good quality site.

So I am trying to learn in the best way possible.

Adobe Dreamweaver is the website editing and management software.

It depends on what kind of site you want to design and manage.

Solutions for wide enteprise portals are quite different from a small business website.

If you plan to build a small to medium website which works out of the box I will suggest Joomla.

Then you can use whichever tool to build single pages, ranging from notepad to Eclipse WTP to Dreamweaver.

It depends on what you want to use it for, what you want to spend, and how much you can learn. I blogged this answer a while back, using two major things as the example.

How to choose between PHP or ASP.Net:

Neither is ‘better’ than the other. Your question is flawed, because there is no "best" - there are only differences, and some differences apply to some projects, while others don’t. Also, as you become more experienced, you may be able to identify cases where those differences don’t matter, and cases where they are project-breakers.

I suspect you are asking this question because you either have a project you need to do, or you are learning development and want to learn the ‘best’ stuff. If you have either of those purposes, then you have an excellent second question here. Post what you are doing and put details and we may be able to point out specific advantages that apply to your specific situation.

And no, don’t use Joomla (which is not general-purpose) or anything like that. You want to pick something mainstream. That means PHP, ASP.Net, or (maybe) JSP - real programming tools, not kid stuff.

Dreamweaver is the best full blown application for website creation, development and management, but requires a solid understanding of the web design process.

Joomla is the best software for Content Managed sites, that is if you have a large site with a lot of pages, it makes it easy to update and change them.

If you are currently a paid Internet subscriber, you are entitled to a "homepage" which often contains simple navigation and editing tools. And if you use the Netscape browser, the built-in Composer feature is a superior HTML authoring tool. You can easily generate a full-blown website as a Homepage. Nevertheless, the "homepage" URL is likely to be "http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscriber… name" and that URL can easily be overwritten via a redirection service, i.e., "mydomain.com" which allows you to link any registered domain name to "mask" another website. For example, should you type in "domainname.com", you will be immediately transported to the homepage and the hompage URL of http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscriber... name will be masked by the domainname.com. And the charge for the redirection service [even at godaddy.com] is normally FREE. Here’s a demonstration: Type in the URL window: "www.pizzanextdoor.com" which will bring up their pizza website. Take note of the domain name. Then type in the URL window: "http://home.pacbell.net/vten/1a/pizzamen… and you will see that this is the original homepage which is unmasked without the domain name!

    Good luck!
