OLPC Mission, Part 2: The XO Laptop, design for learning

Why give a Laptop? See http://laptop.org and http://laptop.org/givemany

Substitute the word Laptop, with the word Education, and you have much of the answer. XOs make it possible to collaborate, learn, teach, and publish at no cost. They inspire new forms of learning, and attention to education. And the provide access to digital texts in places too remote to send and update physical books in a cost-effective way.

    Governor …
Governor Schwarzenegger is proposing an initiative to introduce digital textbooks into schools. It will move Californias education system into the 21st century. But there is no mention in the CDTI about providing devices for reading the texts. Does it mean that students will need to have their own computers? Not every student has. Is the XO laptop cheap enough to give all students? What about a cooperation between OLPC and CDTI. Internet is a great treasure chest for learning!

I help out at the YMCA as a volunteer and swim instructor. Likewise, with the Humane Society, though I don’t teach the dogs to doggy-paddle. I bought 4 of these - 2 for “overseas” and 2 for here… then gave my 2nd unit to some kids in Brazil.

We HELP people because we can HELP people - no more explanation is needed.

It was a joke. and not all hackers are bad. Hacking applies to more than just hacking a bank account or some crap like that. So loosen up and take a joke. I think its great to help the kids, I just think eating is more important than learning, so i think if they want to give a hundred buck, it should be to the poor kids who are starving.

children use the computer for play… Have you ever thought about, that children learn when they play? To use the computer is as important as learning how to read and write.
It is our task to show children, how they can use the internet for learning. Therefore is the OLPC educational the best vision to give children a chance to change their lifes.

¿Do you think that the problem 4 that children is access to food? The problem for them is the lack of education to prevent illnes and capacity of communication to the rest of the world.. the problem to represent their own reality inside. Give them education and when they grow up, they´ll find the SOLUTIONS THEY NEED… unless your “christian” soul prefers beggars… (sorry 4 my rudimentary english)

Shocked! I was shocked by the comments that spoke disparagingly of children using computers.

Information and education are two of the greatest social equalizers known.

By offering children and adults unlimited information and world class education, both of which are available via the Internet, we can save peoples’ lives.

A laptop with an Internet connection given to the poor will be a life changing contribution for recipients.

    books are better. …
books are better. they last longer and they can be more effectively shared. How old is your cell phone or laptop?

It has to be remembered that the web has information for all sorts of things that are not appropriate for children or could be detrimental to communities. , scams, and information like how to destroy things with bombs or guns are also out there.

laptops for the community to share, would be better.

You wouldn’t know. Someone who has been on both sides of the track would. My generation and those before me, look at us! Look at those who have won Noble Peace awards, they did quite well with no internet. From being on both sides of the tracks, books have done much better then the internet. However that’s only coming from me and I’m one of many who are from very low income family’s.

How many books would equal the amount of information on the internet I wonder? Even just the information relevant to these kids lives? Also kids are going to WANT to learn using a laptop over a book any day.
