What would be a price range for having a website designed that visitors could would need to interact with?
Also, is it necessary to hire a web designer for this?
The website would have a data base of real estate listings. There would be a fair amount of graphics and I would like to use Flash if possible because it looks really good. I realize that my question is a little clueless; I’m not a techie. I appreciate your patience and advice!
You can count on that kind of site costing a quite a bit of money to do the right way. When it comes to things like this, you can have two out of these three: Done cheap, Completed quickly, High quality.
A high quality site that is done quickly will cost an arm and a leg. A cheap high quality one may be in development for the next two years, and a cheap, quick one will fall apart and make your visitors go to your competitor.
Hiring a designer is a necessity. As well as hiring a developer. The two are very different, but you can usually find a firm that employs both.
Think of it as building a house…web designer –> interior designer. web developer –> architect
Neither could do the other’s job, and you wouldn’t want them to try.
On average though, a comprehensive database-interactive site can cost between 8k and 10k USD. That is really the low end, though. It can be very expensive to get a site going.
Oh and I’d recommend avoiding flash, it is an accessibility nightmare…meaning that if your visitors don’t have it, they don’t see your content. Look to the big-time sites and see how much Flash they use…sites like Google and Yahoo. YouTube gets away with it solely because there is no alternative…the rest though…anyone who can avoid it will.

Agree with Coder, only I think it will probably cost as high as $20,000 no doubt because if it is all flash then you have actionscript, animation, a side server custom programming going on. Meaning lots of skills will be required which means ding specialists that’s right and they aren’t cheap.

Yes, you need a web designer. Also, you would need someone who would constatantly maitenance the new real esate listings daily. This will probably end up being a part time to a full time position depending on the size. Also, for this kind of site, the user experience is paramount. Users want a quick and seemless experience. For the most part, steer clear of Flash . You want functionality and fresh appeal for business. Not so much drama and design. You also want everyone to have to have as little installed software as possible to access you listings. Also, using Java will slow down your page load time. Your desinger may be able to set up a system of entering listings and picture uploading for you all to key in and auto update yourselves, but accuracy and a smooth process will still need to overseen by the webmaster. Get ready to spend a good bit of money. Probably upwards of $18, 000 .

Apsley Multimedia is a small business website design company based in rural Ontario and charges only $20 per hour. They give free quotes if you check out their website which can be found on Yahoo and Google search engines. Most other professional website design firms charge more.
